THE TRANSMITTERS.. Radio Luxembourg began transmissions in English on Long Wave in 1933. The transmitter was the most advanced in Europe at that time. On 2nd July 1951, the English programmes of Radio Luxembourg moved from Long Wave to the Medium Wave frequency of 1439 kHz (later 1440 kHz) wavelength of 208 metres From that point on, the station was known as 'The Great 208' In 1955 the English service (208 metres) was moved to a new transmitter site at Marnach in the commune of Munshausen, in northern Luxembourg It started off with 200 kW, then increased to 350 kW. In 1962 power was increased to 600 kW and in 1968 it was further increased to 1,200 kW This became the most powerful, privately owned commercial radio transmitter in the world, at that time THE TRANSMITTER FIGHTBACK.. For nearly ten years the inhabitants of Marnach fought a war against the radio antennas in their municipality, with its 1,200 kiloWatts of radiation power. They demanded that it be shut down. After three court decisions and a warning from the Luxembourg ministry, CLT-UFA, a subsidiary of RTL Group, were ordered to stop medium wave transmissions by 2014 (however, this was extended by a further 12 months) The transmitter closed on 31st December 2015 On 11th February 2016 the Radio Luxembourg 1440 kHz masts at Marnach were demolished THE END.. On 30th December 1992, the English service closed for the final time at midnight UK/1am CET on Astra Satellite/ 15350 kHz and AM 1440 kHz/208 metres - leaving nothing but memories The 'Station Of The Stars' went to its final resting place.
