My name is Dr. Martin Gorman and I have been practicing in the Greater Los Angeles area for over 35 years. Today we are going to talk about what health conditions and diseases are associated with sleep apnea and what we have done here, is created this chart which is really fabulous and it goes the different parts the body and shows us what symptoms, issues and other diseases are associated with sleep apnea. You have mood disturbances, depression, anxiety, lost motivation and daytime sleepiness memory loss reduced work efficiency that are associated- and theres loud snoring. In about 15% of cases you have type-2 diabetes. Type-2 diabetes is acquired diabetes so you have to work to get it- it isnt genetic like Type-1. So in type-2 what happens is a lack of oxygen into your system coming in because the airflow has been cut off and what happens is you end up not being able to synthesize the sugar in your system, so you end up getting diabetes because of a lack of oxygen flow. We've had several patients throughout the years were we've treated the patients with sleep appliances and when they get retested after several months, their type-2 diabetes has disappeared. So we know theres a huge connection there. Also, we have hypertension as a major issue associated with sleep apnea. The reason you have hypertension is when the oxygen in your system, or on the back of your airways is blocked from coming in, it creates a fight or flight mechanism in our body and increases the blood pressure- and that's not good for anybody. And the blood pressure really in the studies and tests really goes off the charts and puts tremendous stress on the body. We have coronary artery disease which is huge. We have cardiac arrhythmias because your heart is working overtime. We have congestive heart failure, general heart disease and obviously sudden-death- and none of that is really good or helpful for anybody to be in that condition. So the bottom line is that sleep apnea has a very very dangerous disease and it is associated with a tremendous number of other diseases that cause severe breakdown of our body and can shorten our lifespan tremendously so being treated is critical At any age any time.
