Kalsi town is known for its heritage importance. Famous Mauryan Emperor, Ashoka's inscriptions as rock edicts is present in Kalsi. It's importance rises as it is the only Ashoka's Rock edict located in North India. The language used in these edicts is Pali. At a distance of 44 km from Dehradun and 43 km from Chakrata, Kalsi is a small beautiful village in Dehradun district. It is situated at an altitude of 780 m at the confluence of Yamuna and Tons river. This place serves as the gateway to Jaunsar-Bawar tribal region of the Dehradun district. Kalsi is famous for various ancient monuments, adventure sports and picnic sites. Ashokan Rock Edict, an important monument in the history of Indian epigraphy is one of the popular tourist attractions of Kalsi. This is a rock on which the fourteenth edict of the Mauryan King, Ashoka was engraved in 253 BC. The edict reflects the policies for the commitment to non-violence and restriction of war in Prakrit language and Brahmi Script.
