Sortie (Le vent de l’Esprit) Welcome to the second of two virtual concerts featuring the wonderful Flentrop Organ in Dunblane Cathedral. Current circumstances dictate that these are nonedited and unassisted performances. We hope you enjoy listening, and if there is sufficient support, further concerts will follow. We start this French programme with seven movements from Couperin’s first Organ Mass, marked “for the parishes”, and full of musical colour. The Kyrie and Et in terra pax present plainchant against a glittering harmonic backdrop, whilst the third harmonic is prevalent in the nimble Duo sur les tierces. Charming solo stops are used in the expressively ornamented Récit du chromhorne and Dialogue sur la voix humaine, and reed stops (brassy tone colours) appear in Fugue sue les anches. The latter are combined with upper harmonics in the exuberant Dialogue sue les grands jeux. César Franck’s last published compositions were his Trois Chorals, described by Lizst as “poems…which have a place alongside the masterpieces of Bach”. The second Choral opens with a solemn Passacaglia (repeated melody) which builds in intensity before dissolving into hymnic and lyrical sections and a peaceful passage for the voix humaine stop. This repose is interrupted by a short dramatic outburst, leading to a beautiful treatment of the Passacaglia theme in G minor. The music poignantly grows in intensity, reaching a tragic climax before subsiding into the earlier peaceful music. One of Vierne’s best loved compositions is the Carillon de Westminster, based on the chimes from the Clock Tower of the Palace of Westminster, commonly known as Big Ben. This ebullient piece starts with simple tinkling textures, before gradually building in harmonic complexity, here effectively evoking clanging bells. An affirmative restatement of the theme is interrupted by piquant detached chords before the final triumphant resolution. Messiaen’s Pentecostal Mass was written in 1951, at the beginning of his innovative “middle period”, generally regarded as more astringent in style than his earlier output. The first performance was so well attended that Messiaen struggled to enter his own church! Les choses visibles et invisibles (all that is, seen and unseen) is an astonishing movement, containing a huge variety of musical influences, ranging from hindu rhythms, birdsong, serialism, and the growls of the monster of the Apocalypse. The tone colours may sound strange at times, yet there is still a connection to the sounds of the Baroque French organ. Finally, everything is swept away by the fiery Le vent de l’Eprit (the wind of the Spirit). Wild whirling textures frame the superb middle section, where left hand and pedal perform mirrored rhythmical permutations as a counterpoint to the ecstatic song of the skylark. NEXT VIRTUAL CONCERT AVAILABLE FROM SATURDAY JULY 11th Steven McIntyre, organ (Buxtehude, JS Bach, Vierne)
