Fortress Blagaj / Stjepan Grad - Bosnia and Herzegovina

The beautiful medieval fortress of Blagaj also known as Stjepan Grad. The fortress is situated on a 300m tall crest hill above the town of Blagaj, Bosnia and Herzegovina, a couple of kilometers south of Mostar. The fortress was built on the foundations of a Roman outpost on the 10th century and was increased in size in the later centuries. In May 1404 Blagaj became one of the residences of Duke (vojvoda) Sandalj Hranić, and then of count (herzeg) Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, after whom the people named the fort Stjepan grad. The Ottomans occupied Blagaj in 1465 and was repaired by them two times during their stay. In 1827 a massive earthquake damaged the foundations and in 1835 the fortress was abandoned.
