Word of his situation eventually reached his biological and wealthy aunt, Arlene — the woman Gregory still credits as the one who literally saved his life. Without hesitation, she drove alone in her luxury car into one of Philadelphia’s most dangerous neighborhoods at the time, searching street by street until she finally found him on a corner. After a long and emotional conversation — and her promise that his dogs would be safely cared for — she brought him home. She first took him to her own beauty salon, where several of her staff helped wash and care for him, restoring his dignity. She then took him shopping, told him to choose whatever he needed, and placed him back in school. When that school period ended, her husband contacted Gregory’s biological parents, who were living in Baltimore, Maryland at the time. Gregory’s father came to Philadelphia, brought him home, and did everything he could to help him adjust. Recognizing that Gregory had grown up as an only child and struggled to adapt to a large household, his father chose to focus on quality father-son time, teaching him how to drive and guiding him forward. Soon after, Gregory was enrolled in Job Corps, a U.S. government-sponsored residential education and job training program for young adults ages 16–24 — the largest of its kind in the country. There, he earned his G.E.D. and completed multiple vocational training programs, including automotive training and school bus driving. After completing Job Corps, Gregory returned to Philadelphia, successfully tested for and earned a state high school diploma, and later enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he went on to serve 20 successful years. To this day, he reflects on his journey with humility and gratitude — especially toward his Aunt Arlene, whose courage, love, and decisive action changed everything.
