Talk by Dr Zehra Jumabhoy (University of Bristol) at the Tigers & Dragons: Art, Wales and The British Empire Conference October 2025 at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery. Examining the inter-connections between home, nation, language and belonging explored in Tigers & Dragons, this talk focuses on the complex ways these themes overlap and interlace in the work of the Welsh, Indian and Pakistani artists in the exhibition. Goa-based Nikhil Chopra’s performance, From Land to Fire (2025) based on Richard Glynn Vivian and his travel diaries, picked up on Homi Bhabha’s idea of colonial mimicry in both Welsh and Indian contexts in the Atrium. Whereas in Rooms 8 & 9, contemporary artists – such as Liaqat Rasul, Anwar Shemza, Risham Syed, Zarina Hashmi, Rummana Hussain and Iwan Bala – exude a shared sense of “Hiraeth” (a Welsh word denoting a deep longing for a person, place or time that is lost).
