**Trigger Warning** Throughout the video you will see there is no sound. Please use this time for a moment of silence in honor of those who lost there lives… Marcus Garvey famously wrote: “A people without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” This was a necessary visit to the Cape Coast. For the first time ever, our family (three generations) returned home where our ancestors were taken captive, tortured, raped, starved, and many killed. We start this by saying trigger warning because our guide did a brilliant job at explaining what took place in the castles. The “slave castles” should be called slave dungeons. If you look at the entire video of our experience going through the Elmina Slave Dungeon you will see a lot of emotions from being sad to angry. We stood in dungeons that barely had air flow and absolutely no light. The slaves once free and living their best lives were taken and their lives were changed for the worst in a moment. Riley took in the information and learned so much History that isn’t taught at school in the United States history books. So many details never crossed our minds until we went to learn and walk the grounds our ancestors once walked. We recorded as much as we could so that we can share with those of you who may not be able to make it here one day. We stood where slaves were held in small areas forced to pee, poop, eat and sleep on. They were not able to brush their teeth, wash their bodies or even get rid of the waste when they used the restroom. That very room we stood in is where they clawed at the walls trying to figure a way out. Most stayed there anywhere from a few weeks up to 3 months at a time while their captors awaited empty ships arrivals so they could continue to torture them for the rest of the journey that would take place. We know this video will get a lot of comments that may be negative but it was important for us to share our ancestors history. What bothered us to our core is that they built their churches over the dungeons. How could they worship, praying and sing songs of praise knowing what was beneath the floors of the church? The door of no return is something we know about, but being able to come and see it for ourselves has changed our lives forever. The men and women who survived the treacherous journey walking naked, bare foot with chains and shackles in the hot sun are nothing short of amazing. Some stolen, some betrayed, no matter how they got there, their strength can be unmatched. We come from strong men and women who endured a pain that most of us couldn’t even imagine. Todays environment is harsh but as we move forward we are reminded of what our ancestors went through so that we can have our freedom. We would have made them proud… today we want to encourage you to remember their struggle as you strive to be your best self.
