In October 2023, The Wild Oysters Project: Tyne & Wear, a collaboration with @ZslOrg1826 , Blue Marine, Groundwork North East and Cumbria and British Marine, carried out its first native oyster reef restoration trials, aiming to help recover local oyster populations after their centuries-long decline. This work was made possible thanks to £1.18 million raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Across the UK, wild native oysters have declined by over 95% since 1800s, due to a combination of habitat loss, over-harvesting, pollution and disease. Oysters play a critical role in ensuring UK’s coastlines are healthy. They filter almost a bathtub’s worth of water a day and provide essential habitats for other native marine species.While a series of unprecedented storms shifted some oysters and cultch away from the original reef site, the work to revive oysters alongside the coastline continues. The team have now begun the next stage of the project, trialling new methods to make these superhero reefs more resilient to the unpredictable weather of the North Sea: Oyster “cubes” deployed to save UK’s underwater superhero.
