This past weekend I drove north to Mendocino County California to pay homage to the Emerald Triangle. Mendocino County and Southern Humboldt are the heart of the Emerald Triangle and home to the most dynamic terps and the biggest plants on the planet. First on my stop was the new and improved growers club in Leggett. “Terpy Balboa” of 3rd Gen Family farms is a 90+ winner of cannabis competitions in both flower and hash. The last time he entered into the Emerald Cup he dominated the Cup and his booth after the award ceremony looked like the stock market when a hot stock goes on sale. People were clamoring and climbing over each other to get their hands on these genetics. And, for several reasons, that was the last time that 3rd Gen had a booth at the Emerald Cup. After that, legalization, wildfires, and the pandemic hit Weed Country hard and a lot of the realest ones did not win the coveted and limited licensing it took to stay relevant at big legal events. Around this time, the Ego Clash was born. Brandon did something new, and something only really understood by the grower and weed and hash nerd community. He started “The Ego Clash Invitational”. Anyone who has been around the hill knows this is a playful and hilarious name for a ‘cannabis cup’ in the Emerald Triangle, because there are a lot of egos up in those hills! The other thing that Brandon did differently was to host a NO BUSINESS NO SALES event that would be a peer judged invitational. He called on some others from the community for sponsorship and they stepped up to the plate. The result was a beautiful gathering of like minded individuals who showed up ready to throw down. Really good growers and hash makers, irrelevant of their license status or social media clout, and from the community of hash and weed growing/making dorks, got to gather and sit down and see who really has the best of the best. This year the 2022 Ego Clash is going to be another intense battle and 3rd Gen is also back at the Emerald Cup with a booth for the first time in 5 years. This stands to be an exciting weekend in Weed Country.
