Indonesia has Asia's highest #COVID19 mortality rate of 8-9 per cent, and the most number of deaths after China. Some say its slow response to the pandemic is too little, too late. The government reported zero to low infections in the early stages of the pandemic, while a campaign to #LockdownOrDie urged Indonesian authorities to take urgent action. Observers warn that faced with a surge of cases, the country's inadequate healthcare infrastructure and medical workers are on the brink of breaking down. President Joko Widodo has since allocated some US$26 billion to the fight against the coronavirus. But epidemiologists are worried the move to ease social restrictions now amid economic hardship could worsen the outbreak.
