When Philip II of Macedon was assassinated in 336 BCE, many Greek city-states believed Macedonian control would collapse. Instead, a 20 year old king—Alexander III, later known as Alexander the Great—rose to power and reshaped the ancient world in just 11 years. This video explores Alexander’s rise, his military genius, and his world changing legacy. Alexander’s reign began with rebellion in Greece. To send an unmistakable message, he destroyed Thebes, sparing only the home of the poet Pindar. Once Greece was secured, he embarked on his father’s unfinished mission: the conquest of the Persian Empire. In 334 BCE, Alexander crossed into Asia with roughly 40,000 men—not just soldiers, but scholars, scientists, and writers who documented the lands he conquered. His strategy was bold: rather than fight Persia’s naval power directly, he captured every port along the Eastern Mediterranean—Asia Minor, the Levant, and Egypt—making the Persian navy useless. By 331 BCE, after the decisive Battle of Gaugamela, Persia collapsed. Alexander pursued Emperor Darius III across the empire until he found him murdered by his own men. Driven by ambition and curiosity, Alexander pushed farther east, defeating Indian armies equipped with war elephants and reaching the Indus River. But when his exhausted troops mutinied, he turned back. After a grueling two year journey home, he returned to Babylon—only to die suddenly in 323 BCE at just 33 years old. In a mere decade, Alexander marched more than 22,000 miles, never lost a battle, founded dozens of cities, encouraged cultural blending across his empire, and spread Greek language and ideas throughout the Near East. His conquests laid the groundwork for the Hellenistic world, influencing everything from science and art to the language of the New Testament. Whether he was a visionary builder of a new cultural world or a brilliant but volatile conqueror, one thing is certain: Alexander the Great changed history forever. 👍 Like, subscribe, and share for more history deep dives! #AlexanderTheGreat #AncientHistory #GreekHistory #Macedonia #PersianEmpire #BattleOfGaugamela #HellenisticWorld #WorldHistory #MilitaryHistory #HistoryDocumentary #EducationalVideo #HistoryExplained #AlexanderTheGreatDocumentary
