Romanian mezzo soprano Elena Cernei (1924-2000) studied in Bucharest and began singing with the Romanian National Opera in the early 50's and continued to sing there until the sixties, when she expanded her activities to the major houses of Europe, including La Scala, The Paris Opéra, and the Bolshoi. She traveled to the Americas in the sixties, singing at the Bellas Artes in Mexico, and making her Met debut in 1965 as Dalilah. She sang at the Met for the next three years, doing many important mezzo roles. Her voice was very smooth and dark, characteristic of a Slavic voice, and was quite remarkably beautiful.
