THAT’S MY DESIRE, The Channels, Gone #5012 1957 Flipside: STAY AS YOU ARE – Here is another really great cover song from my music collection. The Channels hailed from Harlem, New York. Group members were Earl Lewis (lead), Larry Hamden (1st tenor), Billy Morris (2ndtenor), Edward Dolphin (baritone) and Clifton Wright (bass). The group members came together in 1955 when members Larry, Billy, Edward and two other members formed a quintet known as The Channels. They were all from the 115th street area of Harlem, New York. The lead and the bass left the group and the three remaining members Larry, Billy and Edward found Earl Lewis and Clifton Wright singing with a group called The Lotharios at a talent show. Earl and Clifton were recruited, and the rest is history!! Earl Lewis and The Channels would go on to record some really great songs on many different record labels - Whirlin’ Disc, Gone, Fire, Groove, Rare Bird, Fury and Channel. If you’re a collector or just a lover of this great music and you’re aware of all the songs this group has given us, it’s really hard to imagine how none of their songs ever charted nationally on Billboard. WOW! "THAT’S MY DESIRE" is a popular song written in 1931 with music by Helmy Kresa and lyrics by Carroll Loveday. The recording by the Sammy Kaye orchestra was released by RCA Victor (20-2251). It first reached the Billboard Best Seller chart on June 13, 1947 for 17 weeks reaching #2. “THAT’S MY DESIRE” by Frankie Laine was recorded on August 27, 1946, with Mannie Klein's Orchestra, and released on (MERCURY #5007). It reached the Billboard ‘Best Seller’ chart on June 27, 1947 and lasted four weeks reaching #4. It was Frankie Laine's first chart hit. Despite the higher chart position of the Kaye version, the Laine version is the widely reported million-seller. “THAT’S MY DESIRE” has been recorded by many artists; Hadda Brooks, Buddy Holly, Ella Fitzgerald, Patsy Cline, Louis Armstrong, James Brown, Chuck Berry, The Flamingos and Dion & The Belmonts – just to name a few.
