Paul Bonhomme, flying Fighter Aviation Engineering's, Hawker Fury ISS (Iraqi Single Seat), G-CBEL, SR661, at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford on 25 August 2023. It was departing for and returning from, a display at Clacton Airshow. This is one of the few Sea Fury/Furys that still retain an original Bristol Centaurus engine. It's now the only one in the UK to do so. This Sea Fury, was built as construction number 37539. It was made by Hawker Aircraft Limited during 1953 as a Fury ISS –(ISS stands for Iraqi Single Seat) for the Iraqi Air Force, as part of contract number 53/1/012 which was for 60 aircraft. The aircraft was numbered 315 within this production batch. Although 10 of the aircraft for this contract were converted former Royal Navy FB.10 or FB.11 Sea Fury variants, this airframe was newly built, without any of the features of the Sea Fury required for maritime operations. Amongst other things both the tail hook and folding wings were deleted. The aircraft was shipped from Iraq to Orlando, Florida, USA during 1979, by Ed Jurist and David Tallichet. In 1989 it was passed to Laws/Coleman Warbird Museum, Coleman, Texas where it was rebuilt to airworthy condition, before flying again in April 1991. It was added to the US Civil Aircraft Register as N36SF. during September 1991 it was shipped to the UK, where it passed into the ownership of John Bradshaw at Wroughton. He retained it until 2009. During this period it flew with Dutch Navy markings and later, with Royal Australian Navy markings. It was added to the UK Civil Aircraft Register as G-CBEL. It was then exported to Australia, where it was registered as VH-SFW on the Australian Civil Aircraft Register. In June 2016 it was imported back into the UK, for its new owners, Anglia Aircraft Restorations Ltd. It was re-registered as G-CBEL. The aircraft has been refurbished and repainted by Air Leasing Ltd. It wears the colours of one of Hawker’s Sea Fury prototypes, coded SR661. This was a modified Fury Mk.II with a tail hook fitted, but without the folding wings that were later included on production Sea Furys. The aircraft is powered by a Bristol Centaurus 18 engine, as originally fitted to production aircraft. These engines are no longer produced, very few survive and they are increasingly rare. So instead many Furys are fitted with either an American Wright R-3350 engine, or a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine.
