Our universe is unlimited, yet bounded. Scientist Jonathan Trent shares why we have to know our limits -- our limits of energy and other vital resources -- so that we can create a future that does not limit our hopes, dreams or aspirations. As a research scientist at the NASA Ames Research Center; Jonathan Trent recently started a grass-roots movement called "Global Research into Energy and the Environment at NASA" (GREEN) in which he developed OMEGA. OMEGA is an ocean-going photobioreactor system to grow algae for making biofuels, food, fertilizer, and other useful products, while treating wastewater and sequestering carbon. Jonathan earned his Ph.D. in marine biology at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and conducted postdoctoral research at Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry, Germany, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and University of Paris, France. He also worked at Boyer Center for Molecular Medicine at Yale Medical School and Argonne National Laboratory. Jonathan is an adjunct professor at UC Santa Cruz and a fellow of the California Academy of Sciences. Jonathan's research has ranged from marine biology to molecular medicine, from astrobiology to nanotechnology. Jonathan Trent does not represent NASA or the US Government in his TEDxYouth@SanDiego talk. TEDxYouth@SanDiego is an independently organized TEDx event designed by youth, for youth to bring the power of big ideas to the youth of San Diego -- and the world. www.TEDxYouthSanDiego.com In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
