Dnyaneshwar the Marathi poet saint from the 13th century is perhaps the most loved of all saints in Maharashtra. In his short life of 21 years( some historians say 16 years) he achieved the highest of spiritual knowledge and attained samadhi. His exposition of the Bhagwad Gita in Marathi is known as Bhaavaartha Deepika or Dnyaneshwari. At a young age he wrote this text full of amazing metaphors making the deeper text of the Bhagwad Gita easily accessible to the common man. Apart from the big texts he is also credited for short poems that convey bhakti and jnaan yoga in just a few verses. The language is very soft and sweet. One such delightful poem is Runu Zunu Runu Zunu Re Bhramara. Bhramara is a beetle. Runuzunu is the poetic description of the buzzing sound of the beetle when it goes around from one flower to another in search for nectar. Dnyaneshwar, fondly known in Maharashtra as Maaooli ( माऊली) , in this poem likens the human mind to a beetle. This mind is never still. It keeps fleeting ( buzzing) from one object to another, one thought to next. To his own mind Maaooli gently nudges to give up its weaknesses and faults and turn itself in one pointed, unwavering devotion to the lotus feet of the Lord. May the fragrance of these lotus feet draw you towards them and thereby help you find the right direction in life, he says to the mind. You will thus attain to the greatest beauty and auspiciousness by offering yourself in the service of the Lord of Rukmini( Panduranga or Vitthala), he assures.
