Verbindungsbahn-Entlastungs-Tunnel (VET) at Hamburg – is it really necessary?

Auto-generated subtitles can be activated by clicking onto the subtitle or CC symbol, then choose translation into the desired language – In Hamburg construction of a new railway tunnel is planned, of the so called Verbindungsbahn-Entlastungs-Tunnel (VET). The suburban train line from Hamburg central station (= Hauptbahnhof, Hbf) via Dammtor to Altona will then be shifted into a new tunnel. So far, suburban trains run on tracks above ground. Those tracks could then be used by regional and long distance trains. For them, there would be 4 tracks then instead of currently 2 tracks. Verbindungsbahn (the route from Hbf via Dammtor to Altona) itself is, however, not the limiting factor. The number of trains per hour is limited by the fact that many trains stop at Dammtor station. This takes about 4 minutes, and so long no other train can stop or pass at the platform. Trains passing non-stop occupy the track for only 2 minutes. It has been suggested that 2 more tracks should be added to Dammtor station. Then 2 tracks would be available for suburban trains and 4 tracks for regional and long distance trains (2 in each direction). While one train stops at the platform, another train could arrive on the second track. This could increase train frequency considerably on the adjacent route. It would even be more helpful to have 4 tracks on the route between central station and Dammtor. Then 2 trains could depart or arrive at Hamburg central station at the same time. This would reduce train load from central station as there would be less congestion on the route to Dammtor. Platforms at central station could handle more trains when trains depart at shorter intervals. No tunnel would be needed for that. Suburban tracks could be shifted to a new position a bit more north. Then 4 tracks could be used by regional and long distance trains. 2 new tracks for suburban trains could be built parallel to the existing route. There are green areas along most parts of the route. Only at Alsterglacis street an elevated railway line, built on supports, would be necessary.
