The UK government has announced plans for a mansion tax, aimed at homeowners with properties valued over £2 million, starting in 2028. Following a major property re-evaluation, this new tax will affect over 100,000 households, with London and the Southeast taking the largest share. 📻 Paula Higgins, CEO of the Homeowners Alliance, caught up with Rosie Wright from the @ListenToTimesRadio Early Breakfast show on 27th November 2025 to discuss what this new tax means for homeowners. 💷 How the Tax Works The mansion tax will be divided into four bands: £2M – £2.5M: £2,500 per year £2.5M – £3.5M: £3,500 per year Above £3.5M: up to £7,500 per year 🌍 Who Will Be Affected High-value homeowners in London and the Southeast face the biggest impact. Paula Higgins explains that while the tax may not be as severe as first suggested, it still represents a substantial annual cost for those above the £2 million mark. ⚖️ Potential Reactions Homeowners may: Appeal property valuations Postpone renovations Consider selling to avoid the surcharge The government is considering a support scheme for those who are asset-rich but cash-poor, including deferred payment options. 🏠 Other Housing Changes Landlords: 2% increase in rental income tax, likely passed to tenants First-Time Buyers: Lifetime ISA may be replaced with a simpler scheme Inheritance Tax: No changes to gifting limits, still relevant for parental assistance ✅ What Homeowners Can Do Check valuations to avoid overpaying Plan finances for potential surcharges Stay updated on consultations and support options This new tax marks a major shift for England’s property market, especially for high-value homeowners in London and the Southeast.
