THE WORLD OF W. Eugene Smith

W. Eugene Smith (1918–1978) was an American photojournalist born in Wichita, Kansas. He began photographing at a young age and studied briefly at the University of Kansas before moving to New York in 1937 to work for magazines. By 1939, he had joined Newsweek and soon after began contributing to Life magazine. During the Second World War, Smith covered the Pacific theatre, producing striking frontline images until he was severely injured in Okinawa in 1945. After recovering, Smith became recognised for his innovative photo-essays in Life. Key works included "Country Doctor" (1948), "Spanish Village" (1951), and "Nurse Midwife" (1951). His essays combined structured sequences with detailed captions and helped to define the form of the modern photographic story. His independence and disputes over editorial control, however, led him to resign from Life in 1954. Smith’s later career focused on ambitious long-term projects. His extensive documentation of Pittsburgh in the late 1950s produced tens of thousands of negatives, making it one of the largest photographic undertakings of the period. In the 1970s, he worked in Minamata, Japan, recording the impact of mercury poisoning on fishing communities. This project, published in 1975 with Aileen Mioko Smith, became his final major body of work and remains a landmark in socially engaged documentary photography. W.
