Severe winter weather sweeping across large parts of eastern North America has been linked to at least 49 deaths over the past week, as extreme cold, heavy snow and ice disrupted daily life for millions. At the height of the storms, around 213 million people across the eastern United States were under some form of winter weather alert, stretching roughly 2,000 miles from New Mexico to New England. Authorities urged millions to remain indoors, while widespread power outages left more than one million customers without electricity at one point. As of Wednesday night, about 312,000 outages remained, mainly in Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. The system later moved into eastern Canada, where Toronto’s Pearson International Airport recorded its highest single-day snowfall on record, with 46 centimetres (18.1 inches). Snowfall totals in downtown Toronto were even higher, reaching 56 centimetres on Sunday. More winter storm warnings have been issued for parts of the United States later this week. Forecasters say sections of the mid-Atlantic region could see between 10 and 20 centimetres of snow from Friday afternoon through Sunday, with North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, upstate South Carolina, Virginia and north-east Georgia facing the greatest risk. Elsewhere, severe weather has also struck parts of Europe. Storm Kirstin hit central and northern Portugal earlier this week, bringing heavy rain and strong winds that triggered more than 3,000 weather-related incidents and caused five deaths. Wind gusts of up to 110mph (178km/h) were recorded at Monte Real airbase in Leiria, while flooding, landslides and extensive damage were reported. Ten coastal districts were placed under red alerts due to dangerous sea conditions, with waves forecast to reach as high as 14 metres. Meanwhile, the southern hemisphere has been grappling with extreme heat. South-eastern Australia has seen record-breaking temperatures, with parts of Victoria and South Australia reaching 48.5C (119.3F) on Sunday. Towns in north-west Victoria recorded highs of 48.9C, setting a new state record. Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology warned of “extreme fire danger” as intense heat combined with dry conditions and strong winds. Firefighters in Victoria are battling multiple blazes, while emergency services have visited around 1,100 homes and sent evacuation alerts to more than 10,000 residents. #WeatherAlert #WinterStorm #ExtremeWeather #ClimateCrisis #PowerOutages #SnowStorm #ColdWave #SevereWeather #NaturalDisaster #EmergencyAlert #CanadaWeather #USWeather #StormUpdate #Heatwave #WildfireRisk #GlobalWeathe
