1992 - Lucky Charms Rainbows - please share This is my favourite Lucky Charms commercial of the ones we made. It was a rushed job, 60 seconds in 10 weeks. That was a very tight deadline in those days. Remember, everything was done on paper, cel and celluloid, all by hand, no digital aids. Lots of animators involved in this one. Russel Brooks, Michael Schlingmann, Mark Broecking, Roberto Cassale and Glen Sylvester and myself (hope I got this right). Michael Schlingmann did not only animate characters, he was also a bit of a wizard when it came to creating rainbow pieces flying in perspective and packs turning, all with one piece of artwork and a colour Xerox machine. To get the rainbow to glow, the artwork would be shot frame by frame under a rostrum camera and then the rainbow would be shot on another pass on black with a diffusion filter. We called that “burning in”. Anything that would go on top would have to be matted out using a “bypass process” where the matte of a character or object would be packed together with a fresh negative inside the camera.
