Sunk Twice in WWII: The Incredible Fate of Malta’s Lost Paddle Steamer

Dive with us into Malta’s WWII history as we explore the wreck of the HMS Hellespont, a British paddle steamer built in 1910 and sunk during the devastating air raids of April 6–7, 1942. Today the wreck lies between 35–41 metres (130 ft) on a sandy seabed just off Fort Rinella—an accessible but atmospheric site for advanced and entry-level technical divers. Originally serving as a Royal Navy tugboat, the Hellespont worked in the Grand Harbour of Valletta when Malta endured one of the most intense bombing campaigns of the Second World War. After taking a direct hit, she sank in the harbour, was later salvaged, filled with construction debris, and scuttled again outside the port. Forgotten for nearly 60 years, she was rediscovered by divers in 1999. In this episode we team up with Watercolours Dive Centre (Sliema)—the same team who supported our dives on the Um El Faroud explosion site and the HMS Stubborn submarine. Together we drop onto the wreck to document its stern section, paddle-wheel shafts, midship debris field, and the eerie remnants of wartime cargo hidden beneath fallen hull plates. During the dive we uncover fused WWII ammunition, likely swept up with rubble during post-war cleanup operations. These artifacts offer a powerful reminder of Malta’s siege and the everyday vessels that became victims of the conflict.
