We left Nairobi before dawn and spent the next nine days exploring the Kenyan coast by 4x4. Part 1 of this expedition follows the journey from Nairobi toward the coast. Day one ended in Garsen, where we set up camp after a full day on the road. From Garsen, we crossed over to Lamu Island, spending time exploring the island and its beaches before continuing south through Malindi. From Malindi, we headed to the Mambrui sand dunes before driving into Arabuko Sokoke Forest — the largest coastal forest in East Africa, where we watched elephants and camped deep inside the wilderness. Along the way, we camped by the beach, caught slow ocean sunrises, and lost track of time as the days blended into each other during the Christmas season. The journey continues through Watamu, bringing Part 1 of the expedition to a close.
