Have you ever noticed how different French furniture design can be? Timothy Langston gives you a tour of Louis XV and Louis XVI periods by showing 4 commodes from his gallery on The Pimlico Road, London The first dates from the middle of the eighteenth century and is made from walnut - a French indigenous timber. There are very few straight lines and the form is serpentine. The second is transitional, looking forward to the Neoclassical and Louis XVI period. The panels are rectangular on the drawer front, the handles and lock escutcheons are circular in the classical taste. One aspect of the Rococo that remains is the slightly curvaceous leg, rather like a cabriole leg. The third is from the Louis XVI period when furniture design was entirely classical in form. The drawers are entirely rectangular, the lock plates circular and the leg plates square and tapering. The fourth is another example from Louis XVI period finished off with a fluted corner taken from Roman column designs. These four pieces will enable you to see the transformation from Louis XV style to Louis XVI style - from Rococo to Neoclassical.
