Odell's Gully is a popular ice climbing route in Huntington Ravine on Mount Washington. Despite the route being mostly snow, with 1-2 pitches of WI2-3 depending on the season, even the strongest skiers tend to shy away from this line in favor of other routes such as Escape Hatch, South Gully and Diagonal Gully. Even though barely anyone thinks of Odell's Gully as a ski line from the top, I couldn’t shake the thought from my head, Odell's Gully is a ski line. I knew with the right conditions, equipment and partner, it would go. Sam and I seized a perfect weather window and skied the line top to bottom, pulling from our backgrounds in steep skiing, ice climbing, rock climbing and mountaineering to make it happen. I find the most meaningful days to be the ones that draw from everything I've learned in each discipline of mountain travel. We utilize all these skills when we climb, such as anchor building, belaying and rappelling, why not incorporate them into ski lines and expand the boundaries of what's possible? This was definitely one of the most challenging, but meaningful days in my quest to ski every line in the Presidential Skiing Guidebook, I look forward to more adventures like this.
