On Friday, June 27, USINDO hosted a Special Open Forum titled: "Whither Indonesia? A Perspective from One of Australia's Most Experienced Diplomats." This unique event features Ambassador John McCarthy, one of Australia’s most seasoned diplomats, offering his insights into Indonesia’s past, present, and future—from the lens of Australia’s foreign policy. Ambassador McCarthy served as Australia’s Ambassador to Indonesia from 1997 to 2000, a pivotal era that included the Asian Financial Crisis, Indonesia’s democratic transition, and the Timor-Leste independence referendum. Over his distinguished career, he also served as Ambassador to the United States, Japan, Vietnam, Mexico, and Thailand, as well as High Commissioner to India.
