Los Angeles Times columnist and KMEX-TV news director Ruben Salazar was killed after he was struck in the head by a tear-gas missile by a sheriff's deputy during a massive riot in 1970 in East Los Angeles. Key questions about his death have never been answered. The newsman had been covering the National Chicano Moratorium Against the Vietnam war. He was taking a break from the action in the Silver Dollar Bar when the 10-inch missile was fired. The violence began after deputies, responding to reports of looting, fired tear gas into the crowd of 20,000 or more people at Laguna Park.
