Boston & Maine F7A 4266 was the final F-unit to be retired from the Boston and Maine Railroad and has been operating at the Conway Scenic railroad since the 1980s. The 4268 was originally an EMD demonstration unit before being acquired by the Boston and Maine Railroad. Following retirement from Boston and Maine, 4268 was stripped of essential mechanical components, including prime movers and traction motors. The locomotive sat on static display next to the North Conway freight house since the early 1990s, but by utilizing parts from a donor unit, the 470 Club successfully restored 4268 back to operating condition in the Spring of 2022. Both locomotives currently see limited service at the railroad. The Conway Scenic Railroad operates over 51 miles of historic Boston & Maine and Maine Central trackage through the White Mountains of New Hampshire. To celebrate the restoration of 4268, the railroad celebrated with several special excursions throughout the 2022 and 2023 operating season. The 470 Club utilized the pair for their annual fall charter through Crawford Notch and the Mass Bay Railroad Enthusiasts featured them for a “Covered Wagons in the Snow” charter in January 2023. The railroad also organized a special triple-header excursion in the spring with Ex-Maine Central GP7 573 joining the “Covered Wagons.” This season also highlighted the first time the railroad was able to operate two F units back-to-back since 2010. The 470 Railroad Club of Portland, Maine was named after the final steam locomotive to operate on the Maine Central Railroad and was established following the locomotive’s retirement in 1954. The club organizes monthly meetings, railroad excursions, and maintains an active fleet of historic locomotives at the Conway Scenic Railroad. In this video, Dynamo Productions highlights events featuring 4266 and 4268 throughout the season.
