Deep Roots: 30 Years of Cannabis in Canada

Thirty years ago, few could have imagined walking into a store to buy premium, Canadian-grown cannabis. From 1938 to 1998, hemp was illegal but in 1995 under Natural Emphasis, we began selling hemp products and advocating for legalization through education. A three-year research project with Dr. Ernest Small, studying 180 hemp varieties, revealed the therapeutic potential of CBD and led to the creation of Canada’s first CBD brand, @wholehempcbd. In 2013, we incorporated ABIDE, earning one of Health Canada’s first 20 licences to build. Our belief in full-spectrum wellness balancing THC, CBD, and terpenes guided our product innovation. Following nationwide legalization in 2018, we launched WholeHemp, dedicated to hemp-based CBD, alongside our outdoor cultivation in Trent Hills. Today, in 2025, ABIDE and WholeHemp continue to grow nationwide, offering thoughtfully crafted collections that help Canadians discover balance through the full therapeutic potential of the cannabis plant.
