(22 Apr 2014) The Colombian birthplace of Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez held a symbolic funeral on Monday to honour the poet, who died in Mexico last week. Thousands of people in Aracataca, on Colombia's Caribbean coast, joined in a procession in from Garcia Marquez's childhood home, now a museum dedicated to his life and work, to the church in the centre of town. People were also able to write messages to the revered writer and place them in a glass box, which was then carried to the church for the service. The mourners carried hundreds of yellow flowers and yellow paper butterflies, a reference to the character Mauricio Babilonia, from the "one Hundred Years of Soltitude" novel, who was always trailed by a cloud of yellow butterflies. Yellow was Garcia Marquez's favourite colour.
