Walking in the footprints of the Saints? Err, I'd rather not, to be honest. Besides, that was only yesterday. The Citizen Cairn looks much further back in time.... 'Obscure' and 'hidden' are two adjectives which, in The Citizen Cairn's opinion, are somewhat misused by YouTube 'travel bloggers' in search of 'clickbait'. Tell me about it? Rest assured, however, these descriptors certainly apply to the Bronze Age cairn located upon the flat height of Garreg Fawr, overlooking the North Walian coastal village of Llanfairfechan. In short, not even the professional archaeologists can agree exactly what still resides here, the monument never troubling the ink supplies of those wondrous people of the Ordnance Survey. Nevertheless, having been made aware of its existence, The Citizen Cairn was naturally curious. I approach from Nant-y-felin to the north, a steep track climbing away to join the 'Pilgrim's Way' (crossing North Wales to Bardsey Island). But hey, Christian saints were only yesterday... the much older cairn reached by heading ever southwards towards the rearing peaks of the northern Carneddau. Located a little east of the 1,250ft summit of Garreg Fawr (note that the craggy 'top' towering above to one's left upon the ascent is somewhat lower at c1,194ft), the monument is small, elusive, occupying an exposed position not compatible with the alternative categorisation as a 'hut circle'. No, surely this was a cairn? To the east is Bwlch y Ddeufaen, a gap in the hills marked by standing stones and the great cairn Barclodiad-y-Gawres (Giantess's Apronful - see link below). The wind is brutal, the sea views and upland vibe exquisite.... I take my time here, allowing thoughts of past centuries - nay, millennia - to wash over me, analogous to the mass of cloud, scale incomprehensible, racing across the sky as I gaze upwards. OK, some may wish to stomp past, without pausing, upon the great trek from Basingwerk Abbey to Bardsey Island... and good luck to them. However, lying hidden in plain sight is something far older which, in my estimation, is perhaps worthy of far more consideration.
