Tuesday 27th Jan 2026 We have just come through yet another period of very wet stormy weather with storm Chandra. The news from Northern Ireland tells us that, 'Heavy rain and high winds overnight have caused disruption on the roads, with winds of 50mph expected, and gusts of up to 80mph, in counties Down, Antrim and the eastern side of Co Londonderry. NIE Networks has said there are approximately 3,800 customers currently off supply with a peak of 10,000 customers off supply at 9am. All flights have also been cancelled into and out of Belfast City Airport until lunch time, with Stena Line sailings also cancelled.' There has been flooding again with trees down and some people sadly getting hurt. This is not uncommon weather during any Northern Ireland winter. The big question is, does our present stormy weather justify shutting 300+ schools across the country? Was our weather today significantly more severe than any other day previous when we didn't shut down? Did schools in the Republic close? Did schools on the mainland close? Does anyone from my generation remember schools across the country, shutting en masse like this, when we were growing up? I certainly do not! I do remember wading through deep snow and being buffeted by wind and I do remember being drenched through by heavy rain, to get to school. I also remember schools never shut! The very thought never entered anyone's head! Does anyone know who ordered this shut down? Or was it left up to individual head teachers to make the decision? Have we become a nation of wimps? So much so that we are going to shut our schools before every potentially hazardous weather situation? This is the second such school closure this winter. How many more is there likely to be? What are working parents supposed to do when they are informed only hours before work that their child's school is staying closed? How are they to find child minders at such short notice? What view are employers like to take when parent workers do not turn up for work? Does anyone have any thoughts on these recent storm closures of schools? Do you agree with what I'm saying in the video or do you disagree? ( As a grandparent of three school children I am rather surprised to see schools close across the country with such relative ease. ) All polite responses will be welcomed.
