Welcome back to Journey Church as we continue our walk through the Gospel of Matthew. Today we’re in Matthew 19—a chapter where Jesus lovingly but firmly confronts some of the most personal and challenging areas of our lives: marriage, singleness, children, wealth, and what it truly means to follow Him. 👉 View our pastors "How to Read the Bible and Actually Enjoy It. Try This Simple Framework" video here: • This Simple Framework Turned My Bible Read... 👉 Download the free SOAP guide here: https://www.mattdawson.tv/read-your-b... This chapter isn’t meant to condemn—it’s meant to clarify. Jesus exposes false assumptions, confronts hidden idols, and invites us into a Kingdom that values surrender over status and trust over control. –––––– 📖 What we see in Matthew 19: ✅ 1) Marriage, Divorce, and the Heart of God (Matthew 19:1–12) The Pharisees try to trap Jesus with a loaded question about divorce. Jesus responds by going all the way back to Genesis—revealing God’s original design for marriage as a lifelong, covenantal union. • Divorce was permitted because of human hardness of heart • Jesus calls His followers to a higher Kingdom vision • Singleness and celibacy are also honored callings in the Kingdom Key takeaway: God’s design flows from love and wholeness—not loopholes and legalism. ✅ 2) Jesus and Children: Who the Kingdom Is For (Matthew 19:13–15) The disciples try to push children aside, but Jesus rebukes them. He welcomes the children, lays hands on them, and declares that the Kingdom belongs to such as these. Key takeaway: The Kingdom belongs to the humble, dependent, and overlooked. ✅ 3) The Rich Young Ruler: What Do You Still Lack? (Matthew 19:16–26) A wealthy young man asks the question we all ask: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus exposes the man’s hidden idol—not wealth itself, but trust in wealth. When invited to sell everything and follow Jesus, the man walks away sorrowful. Key takeaway: Eternal life is an inherited gift, not an earned reward. ✅ 4) What About Those Who Gave Everything? (Matthew 19:27–30) Peter asks the honest question: “We left everything—what about us?” Jesus responds with grace, reassurance, and a promise of eternal reward. Key takeaway: What we surrender for Jesus is never truly lost. –––––– 🔥 Big Themes in Matthew 19: • God’s Kingdom values commitment over convenience • Singleness and marriage both have purpose and dignity • Children matter deeply in the Kingdom • Wealth can quietly become an idol • Following Jesus always costs something—but it’s worth it –––––– 🤔 Reflection Questions: 1. Am I approaching Jesus transactionally—or relationally? 2. What might Jesus lovingly ask me to lay down? 3. Where do I find my security—God or what I possess? 4. Am I willing to follow Jesus even when it’s costly? 🙏 Prayer focus: “Jesus, show me what I still lack—not to shame me, but to free me. Help me trust You more than anything else.” Thanks for studying Matthew 19 with us. #BibleStudy #Matthew19 #JourneyChurch #FollowJesus #KingdomOfGod #GraceNotWorks
