HIMSS Interoperability Showcase - Maternal Sepsis and the Newborn Experience

Maya is a 39 year old patient of mixed Hispanic heritage and is 38 weeks pregnant with twins. She arrived in labor and admitted to the hospital with prolonged premature rupture of membranes persisting for over 24 hours. Maya is admitted to the hospital through the EMR where she and her fetuses are assessed. Maya is febrile with 102-degree temperature and diagnosed with maternal sepsis. She is placed on a fetal monitor that assesses both fetal heart tones, uterine contractions and maternal vital signs. Perinatal records are integrated with the EMR to provide a broad digital picture of patient care for Maya and her babies in utero. This real-time data is sent back to the care team. Maya is admitted to Labor & Delivery (L&D) and gives birth to her twins. The newborns, April Williams and Sam Williams are delivered and transferred to the NICU where they receive antibiotic infusions. Birth reporting is provided to the state registry. Learn more.
