■ Healing Buddha - Journey towards & The Statue(3:18 min) Healing Buddha - Nihon-ji Buddha temple located in mountain of Nokogiri, 102 ft high, stone sculpture...double the size of most photographed Kamakura’s Buddha statue... They say “container of medicine in the Buddha’s left hand. Bathing in the radiance of the container’s precious stone emerald is said to cure illness, both mental and physical.” Combined with the trail to top of NokogiriYama, it’s a beautiful place to be in midst of nature... ■ More on history: Some also refer to as the "Medicine Buddha", he is described as a doctor who cures dukkha (suffering) using the medicine of his teachings. In 1989, the government of India presented Nihon-ji with a sapling from the Bodhi Tree as a gesture of world peace. Nihon-ji is now a popular tourist destination. The tree sapling does not reside there now and is reloacated to an environment which suits it better. Established during the Nara period more than a thousand years earlier, in 725 CE by the Hosso sect. It is now run by the Soto Zen sect, one of the largest Japanese Buddhist organizations. Scattered through the trails of Nokogiri, in and around Nihon-ji, are more than 1500 statues depicting arhat, or mortals who have attained enlightenment. Each arhat is said to have a unique facial expression, and photographers can spend hours capturing amusing angles and visages.
