When Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia descended upon the town of Gettysburg, most of the civilians either fled or hid until the battle was over. But one citizen wasn't having any of it and took up arms to defend his town. After the Battle of Gettysburg, John Burns would become known as "The Hero of Gettysburg" and would even have an honored seat next to Abraham Lincoln at a church service later that November.
