HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. -- A former Little League baseball coach has been arrested after accusations arose he inappropriately spanked children at his house. Jonathan Shawn Russell, 33, is charged with four counts of misdemeanor Assault On a Child Under 12. According to police, Russell is accused of pulling down boys' pants and underwear and spanking them multiple times with his hand. "I was sort of, quite in shock when it was brought up to me," Tom Albright said, president of the Henderson County's Little League. Albright said he has known Russell for years. He said all required background checks were done and nothing negative came back. "It hurts. These are kids I know. These are families I know," Albright said. "Immediately we heard the allegations and took appropriate actions to remove him from our program." Russell, Albright said, has a 9-year-old son who plays baseball in the league. Investigators said boys would come over to the house and Russell took it upon himself to discipline them. The alleged spankings happened between August 7 and Jan. 27 at Russell's house on Brookside Drive in Henderson County. According to investigators, while Russell is charged with assault, there is an obscure North Carolina law that allows for someone to spank someone else's child that is staying at their house unless the child's parent specifically tells them not to. No one answered door when News 13 knocked Wednesday night, and Russell did not return a call to his phone made by News 13. "I have a board of directors meeting Monday," Albright said. "And we fully plan on going forward to say look, 'we would like to see the law changed.' If you're going say it's OK to spank your child when he's at your residence, then there needs to be a change where you're made to, at least, tell that parent that that has occurred." Russell, of Hendersonville, turned himself into the Henderson County magistrates office and is currently free on $4,000 bond. The investigation is ongoing.
