The vaquita porpoise (Phocoena sinus) is tiny, endangered, and also very cute. It lives only in the Gulf of California between Baja California and mainland Mexico and belongs to a group of animals called Cetaceans, which includes whales, dolphins and porpoises How many vaquita are left? No one really knows for sure. At this point, the population of the vaquita porpoise is certainly below 20, although it’s hard to get a full picture because they are notoriously shy. I first learned of the vaquita porpoise on a trip to San Francisco where I visited the Marine Mammal Centre. I picked up a book called Vaquita: Science, Politics, and Crime in the Sea of Cortez by Brooke Bessesen. After reading it I knew I had to help spread the vaquita porpoise’s story, share vaquita facts, and make sure everyone knows why we should ALL care about the vaquita porpoise and its plight. Oh and also I learned about the baby vaquita porpoise, which are super cute and the size of tiny footballs.
