First I’m sure I must explain to you what high brow means: in and around 1880 Dr Franz Gall created the study of the cranial bone and this pseudo science called “phrenology”, he researched and proved that a high forehead shows intellectual superiority, because there is more capacity for the brain, a small forehead which resembles a Neanderthal equals low intellect and primitive or criminal impulses. “Hibrow” began to reference the hierarchy of culture and breeding. In 1900 the term “lowbrow” starts to show up in news media, used to imply popular, illegitimate, vulgar, and impure. If Opera, and classical theater, were not accessible, then came the blues, jazz, comics, and cinema, which are then banished from high culture because of being too accessible. The driving forces which define culture vertically, establish hierarchies which preserve, nourish, and enlarge the values of a group in the context of history. Representational art is pathological art, crazy art, and all that is wrong with an era; disintegrating the values of society itself.
