Jhumur is a form of folk Music, popular in the Chhota Nagpur Plateau, including states like West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chattisgarh and Assam, which is a melting pot of many tribal and other communities. The charm of rhythmic melody and dialogue-based verses has made Jhumur quite popular among the masses. Though this folk form has been existent from much before the Bauls, it concurs a lot with the Baul philosophy, including allegorical lyrics and Deho-tatva. This is a major reason why many Baul musicians have accepted it with open arms and incorporated Jhumur in their performances. In 1970, renowned poet, Kabi Arun Chakraborty was waiting at the Srirampur Railway Station. Suddenly, a Mahua tree (Madhuca longifolia) caught his attention. The poet was quite connected with and a regular visitor of rural Bengal in the Chhota Nagpur Plateau, where this tree is generally found and forms an integral part of the life, rituals and culture of the tribal communities inhabiting the area. Hence, the perishing image of the tree broke his heart and he wrote a poem about it. In his poem, he asks the tree to go to his native locale in Rarh Bengal, where red soil and hillocks are prevalent and that, its place near the Railway Station was not suiting it. He then suggests or visualizes, what all good things could have happened, had the tree been in its original habitat. After some days, he made his friend, renowned musician, Basudeb Das Baul, listen to this poem. Basudeb Das Baul had spent a major part of his life growing up with the culture & traditions of the tribal communities along with the melody of Jhumur in his core. He composed for this poem, 'Lal Paharir Deshe Ja', and the song got so much acclaim that it became one of the most popular Bengali Folk songs since then. In this video, the same song has been performed by Basudeb Das Baul's son, Subhamay Das Baul, whom we fondly call 'Bhola'. This community started with the largest Cultural Revolution in the history of human civilization, the Bhakti Movement led by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Their syncretic traditions are the outcome of a culmination of Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism. Baul Music and Philosophy are deeply intertwined, with the Music serving as a medium for expressing and exploring our inner-self and the world around us, in search of the Divine. They also emphasize the importance of love, compassion, and tolerance, and reject distinctions based on caste, religion, or social status. Duality is a common theme in Baul song lyrics, with allegorical narratives using metaphors. ‘Deho-tatva’ – a recurring premise in Baul lyrics – is a concept of portraying nature and the universe through our bodies, which reflects the immortality of the cycle of life and death. It connects sex and spirituality – spiritual union of the individual with the Divine - to attain Moksha. #JhumurSong #BengaliSong #FolkSong #Music #FolkMusic #JhumurMusic #BengaliMusic #Singer #BaulSinger #BengaliSinger #FolkSinger #Artiste #BaulArtiste #BengaliArtiste #FolkArtiste #Performer #BaulPerformer #BengaliPerformer #FolkPerformer #Musician #BaulMusician #BengaliMusician #FolkMusician #DehoTatva #Radha #Krishna #Allah #Khuda #BasudebDasBaul #RabiDasBaul #BrindabanDasBaul #Manik #SubhamayDasBaul #Bhola #HaritStory #GaanFun #FILMSTOP #SujoyDas
