The club was named after the strange rock formations on the mountaintop that resembled the Hound Dog ears. The golf course was designed by George Cobb, & the clubhouse was designed by Blowing Rock architect Claus Moberg. Hound Ears was also home to one of the south's first ski slopes. The golf resort became very popular and the players coaxed the Grovers into building roads up the mountain allowing homes to be built. Spencer Robbins said "we didn't have a plan for a development; it just happened."
