Making Sense of the Transvaginal Mesh Controversy | UPMC

Polypropylene mesh is successfully used to correct stress incontinence, but the modality has more recently been controversial when applied to the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse. However, with newer and more durable materials available and improved technique, transvaginal mesh is showing higher success rates than native tissue repair. Jonathan Shepherd, MD, of the Women’s Center for Bladder and Pelvic Health at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC, explains that despite the recent controversy surrounding transvaginal mesh, it remains a viable option to correct pelvic organ prolapse when nonsurgical methods are not effective.
