Born from fire and ice ICELAND is located at the junction of tectonic plates offering landscape diversity unlike anywhere else. Inspired by the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - we hunt for locations from films set in Icelandic nature; and the list is long... If you're heading to badlands, 4x4 is a must; and from our observations the bigger wheels the better, even a retro will do if only AWD works fine; Due to dynamic weather a regular road can change rapidly into a stream and an innocent stream can become within seconds a wild river. Our beast of our choice on the island will be the mighty Terrano, in a beautiful shade of blue that fits perfectly into the surroundings. It is not about the 2,7 turbodiesel engine / or 4-WD, which are are great that make it unique or automatic gearbox and hi-fi stereo - which super useful; it is the sleeping area in the back; that makes it an ultimate companion for off-grid nomads' adventure. Equipped with 4x4 beast and a house on wheels, we just let it carry ourselves into the wilderness. Thórsmörk - Þórsmörk We start from Thorsmörk; a valley named after the Norse god of thunder - Thor. located between three of the most amazing glaciers, the nature reserve (Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull) bacame famous in 2010 after the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, when Thor sneezed so intesively that the entire Þórsmörk valley was covered with volcanic ash, air traffic over the continent stopped and the ash cloud reached the stratosphere, where it remained for several months. Arnafjordur The West Fjords of Iceland is truly the island’s hidden secret. with its table mountains, many long and beautiful fjords, sandy beaches and small fishery towns it'a so different then elsewhere on the island. Latrabjarg The westernmost place in Iceland is the Latrabjarg cliff - the largest bird habitat in Europe. Over 14 kilometers long cliff, with its height ranging between 400 and 900 meters above the sea level, would be a perfect place for one day trekking. Hverir Hverir is the Icelandic word for hot springs, - geothermal area. The yellow and orange-coloures around rhyolite mountain Námafjall (482 m.a.s.l.) come from sulfur deposits. It was Mt. Námafjall where sulfur mines where located and where sulhpur was extracted and exported for the use of gunpowder in the past. We quickly get used to sleep during white nights and acomodate in our 4wd camper and after few days of nomading from place to place we realize how powerful equipment it is and how much fun it gives offering freedom and shelter. This might be the moment when nomad was born.. Forced with weather change we head north/east - to the land of waterfalls and volcanoes Black. Volcanoes are black, lava is black, black is the soil and roads are black, even salt on the butter is black, surrounded with surreal colours we quickly forget about th world outside. 1000 waterfalls Spectacular waterfalls of Iceland - inspire, delight and overwhelme; Gullfoss creates a dreamlike rainbow show Aldeyjarfoss - reminds us that nature also inspires archutectures - its basalt columns, were a source of artistic inspiration for the island's most iconic buildings, like Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík and Akureyrarkirkja Wondering near Dettifoss, you instantly feel small and insignificant. In its peak condition, over 600m3 of water (per second) can be transported by Detifoss. Landmannalaugar For all trekkers and mountain lovers like us, Landmannalaugar - had been goal in itself since ever; both geologically and esthetically unique - creates one and only landscape on earth At the foot of the mountains lies the ebony-black Laugahraun lava field - a vast area of cooled magma originating from the eruption of the Brennisteinsalda volcano around 1477. It is not easy to describe in one short footage all the natural beauty that we've encounter during our expedition in Iceland. Saying goodbye to all this beauty // we say thank you - to our brave Terrano which we enjoyed so much and already know we'll miss it. And which triggered the nomad's gene in us that would have developed and evolved since then - as it very soon would have occurred - shaped us to who we are today. After several nights spent in our minimalistic mobile base camp - we highly appreciate the simplicity of a hotel room and let quiet and peaceful corners of Reykavik gently bring us back to reality. Quick look at the map only illustrates how narrow Island's area we've visited - concentrating on north-west and the central badlands. Living fulfilled with thoughts on how many places still to visit we'd left - already looking forward to come back... camera: Canon gx3 DJI Phantom 3
