Today’s pie comes from Old Fernvale Bakery, located out at Fernvale in south-east Queensland, not far from Ipswich. This place has a bit of a reputation. When you talk to people about the area, they will usually say, “You’ve got to stop at Fernvale and try one of the pies.” So here we are. Today I have a steak and mushroom. Pulling it out of the nicely printed bag, first impressions are pretty good. Nice golden colour on the top with a little bit of flake. Not a lot, but enough to give it a bit of character. The sides are reasonably firm and the base feels solid, which is always encouraging. The join around the edges is neat enough as well. Getting into it, the steak flavour comes through well with a decent gravy holding it all together. The mushroom is there, though I wouldn’t have minded a little bit more of it just to lift that flavour a touch. Pastry holds up well overall. The lid has a bit of flake and the base stays firm without falling apart. Sara enjoyed her Pepper Steak pie. Lots of chunks of meat and a strong pepper flavour. At around the eight dollar mark, it’s a solid bakery pie and an easy one to finish. Until next time, happy munching.
