The Basilica Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Penha de França, popularly known as Igreja da Penha is a traditional Catholic sanctuary located in the neighborhood of Penha, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Built on top of a rock, it is famous for the 382 steps of the main staircase, where many faithful pay promises, going up on foot or by inheritance. The Basilica (or Sanctuary) also has 3 funiculars to facilitate access for people who cannot climb its stairs and steps. All are available for free. Annually, the sanctuary celebrates the patron saint, in October, promoting the celebration of hourly masses on Sundays, religious shows, light processions, outdoor masses, presentation of folkloric groups, presentation of choirs and there is also the party on the stairs.
