Workshops Life-skills for Inmates, Families and Training Wings' L.l.F.T.s are based on Wings For L.I.F.E. - Life-skills Imparted to Families through Education (WFL), a National and State Best Practice Model which has received the following recognitions and awards: • National Award of Excellence in Crime Prevention - American Probation & Parole Association • NM Children’s Law Institute’s Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice Award • Martin Luther King Jr. Keep the Dream Alive Award • NM Innovative Behavioral Health Program Star, one of the top 10 Behavioral Health programs in New Mexico Wings For LIFE International offers 2-day workshops at prison facilities, halfway house, and juvenile facilities. L.I.F.T. workshops are designed for inmates with a release date within one year or less, or any inmate who has been identified by the prison/facility. (Estimated 25 - 75 inmates/workshop.) Family members may also be included in the workshops so they learn together with their incarcerated loved one. Wings has created a way to rebuild lives during and after incarceration and uses its curriculum, Strengthening Families from the Inside Out, to teach basic life skills to inmates so they can implement these skills in everyday life. 3 workshops: 1. Communication 101 – 40 Developmental Assets. Workshop participants are taught Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets© and how to build them as an evidence-based curriculum to foster positive, clear communication through interactive activities and games. 2. Guaranteed Ways to Get a Job – Inmates learn how to identify the job field they are interested in, how to create a resume, and are tuaght basic work ethics that are needed to be successful in the workplace. Inmates usually wait until release to start thinking about a job and what they would like to do upon release. This innovative session starts preparing them for reentry and teaches ways to “hit the ground running” in finding a job once they return home. 3. Tips for Stretching a Dollar – Money is always an issue for the loved ones at home and especially for the returning citizen when he/she goes home. Budgeting tips are taught to help inmates save money and be more mindful of spending habits. A L.I.F.T. Workshop is designed to teach inmates how to build and strengthen relationships with their families through discussion, mentoring, empowerment and support with WFL staff and volunteers by teaching life skills addressing individual family needs.
