Sunita Williams Returns To Earth. NASA's Crew-9 Mission Gingerline Media Sunita Williams SpaceX Crew-9 Earth Return : Sunita Williams's return marks a significant milestone, as her mission was originally intended to last only eight days. However, technical issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft necessitated a prolonged stay in orbit. After an unexpected 9-month stay at the International Space Station in low earth orbit, astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore have finally returned back to earth, splashing down a few hundred kilometres off the coast of Florida. The initial drogue parachutes have been deployed to slow down the vehicle that has just cleared the Earth's atmosphere. The parachutes will slow down the spacecraft for a water landing in the Atlantic Ocean. The drogues were deployed at an altitude of five kilometres above the surface. Nasa mission control said that the weather at the splashdown site was looking favourable. The Crew Dragon’s systems are also performing well and the ship tasked to recover the spacecraft is ready to meet the crew off Florida’s Gulf Coast. We have the first visuals from inside the Dragon spacecraft. Astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, who were stuck at the International Space Station (ISS) for more than nine months, have returned to Earth and splashed down off the coast of the American state of Florida. Originally, Williams and Wilmore launched aboard Boeing’s Starliner on June 5 for what was intended to be a short test mission. However, a series of technical issues forced NASA to return the Starliner to Earth without them, extending their stay at the ISS and delaying their return. According to NASA, Williams and Wilmore undocked from the ISS at 10:35 am IST Tuesday and set on a 17-hour trip back to Earth.
