It is inspired by one of my favourite electric guitar players, Carlos Santana. I have noticed that teaching material and interesting, melodic solos are few and far between in the electric guitar repertoire. Often, electric guitarists are reduced to playing power chords or repetitive riffs. I wanted to provide something substantial which would be suitable for exams, concerts and festivals. The piece presents many of the elements of great electric guitar style: (1) The use of Aeolian mode, also known as the natural minor scale (2) The use of three-note per string melodic technique (3) The use of pull-offs, hammer-ons and slides. (4) Playing in higher positions. The main body of the piece uses Aeolian mode on A over a 12-bar minor blues. Chord symbols have been added as an accompaniment which could be played by teachers or other students. The second section modulates to C major (the relative major) and uses a cycle of 4ths before returning to Aeolian mode and a recap of the first section. A set of bars are provided with chord symbols to encourage improvisation over the first section before the return of the main theme. I have used Aeolian Blues with many of my students of all ages and I’m grateful to say that it has been very popular. I hope you enjoy Aeolian Blues as much as I’ve enjoyed composing, playing and teaching it.
