The Sussex woodlands reveal decades of change, showing how shifting management, storms and seed cycles continue to shape the region’s wildlife. Switch to Ecotalk: https://www.ecotalk.co.uk/our-deals This film explores how Sussex woodlands have transformed across a generation, with Steve talking Chris through the subtle shifts over time that have that defined the landscape. He recalls a time when chestnut coppice, timber production and active woodland management created a balanced cycle; habitats were maintained, deer numbers were controlled and local crafts thrived. The 1987 storm altered that rhythm, toppling timber, exhausting an already-struggling industry and leaving many woodlands unmanaged. As coppice declined, deer populations rose, grain feeding increased and squirrels proliferated. Against this backdrop, this year’s abundant acorn crop hints at renewed regeneration. With ecological context shaped by Chris Packham, they reflect on how Sussex is moving from lost cycles towards a healthier, more resilient woodland future.
